Elevation gain: 770 m
Description:
Did you know you can do a small mountain grand prix without ever leaving Città Alta?
By following this route, you can see all the views of this beautiful medieval fortress from every possible angle. In sequence, you will face:
1. La Madonna del bosco:
A small warm-up stage, 1 km with a 6.8% incline immersed in the woods.
2. Via Orsarola from Pascolo dei Tedeschi:
A wonderful climb that goes from the woods to the village, with variable slopes and walls for 3.3 km at a 6.2% incline with a 207 m elevation gain.
Descent towards the urban part of the Brembana valley with suggestive views and technical curves.
3. The Venetian walls:
Return to the city and complete climb of the main walls (Unesco heritage) through Sant'Agostino gate up to Colle Aperto. 2 km at 5%.
Here you can take a break to drink from the fountain or to have an ice cream where the Stracciatella flavor was invented, at "La Marianna".
4. San Vigilio and Orsarola peak:
Another series of hairpin bends with medium-high slopes, some sections at 12%, reaching the San Vigilio castle and then the peak of Via Orsarola.
5. Via San Sebastiano:
A small transfer along another characteristic and less frequented road of Città Alta with a final climb at 17% to return to San Vigilio and its panoramic viewpoint.
6. La Boccola:
Descend from the Venetian walls to Sant'Agostino gate but this time ascend from the "Fara", with the Sant'Agostino convent, the view of San Lorenzo gate.
Here begins the infamous "Boccola" (via della Boccola), a splendid climb where the cheers of the Giro d'Italia explode in a sea of people with slopes up to 15%.
The route manages to combine panoramic views for bike-packers with climbs for aspiring pros, tourism and the Giro d'Italia. A good climber's disposition and a great desire for historic alleys are recommended.
For the more daring, there is also a version with the climb of Val d'Astino, where your calves won't thank you for the 17% incline on cobblestones ;) .
